Pairing cycling and pub hopping has always been one of our favourite activities that gives us immense joy.
However, sifting through endless reviews, and a lack of captivating interior photos, had become a source of continuous frustration
when it came to finding our next
cosy, old school or historic boozer.
One Sunday afternoon inspiration stuck and we came up with the name "Beautiful Boozers"
that captures everything
we love about pubs.
With so many uninspiring drinking establishments devoid of character
and photos that fail to capture
the unique vibe of the great British pub, it is really challenging to know which ones are actually worth a visit.
To address this nagging frustration, we came up with the idea of
Beautiful Boozers.
However , we didn't fully jump on board until the pandemic struck, solidifying our appreciation for pubs.
For us, finding
a Beautiful Boozer is like finding each other,
you get that instant connection which leaves you feeling right
at home and you don't want to leave!
Whilst we came up with the idea of Beautiful Boozers in 2017, it wasn't until the pandemic struck that our appreciation for pubs truly blossomed.
As we witnessed the impact on these beloved establishments, we felt a strong desire to do our part by inspiring fellow pub lovers to explore those historic and old school pubs that had stolen our hearts.
Since then we haven't stopped. We're now on
a epic quest to map out all the Beautiful Boozers across the UK and transform this website into

The heritage of a British pub encompasses
its historical, cultural and social significance.
Many are steeped in history, with their walls echoing stories of the past; some are linked to famous writers, whilst others were frequented
by some shady characters.
British pub culture also has its own set of
traditions and customs that reflect
the nation’s heritage.
From the pub crawl, to the tradition of buying rounds, or crowding around the bar
(not forming a line!), these customs contribute
to the unique social atmosphere
associated with pubs.
The culinary heritage is another part
of the British pub experience, offering classic pub fare like a Scotch Egg, Bangers and Mash,
Fish & Chips, Sunday Roast, or Steak & Ale Pie.
Let’s keep British pub heritage alive.
By simply visiting them, we can ensure
that these cultural treasures thrive
in today's ever-changing world.
The concept of drinking establishments
began to take shape in medieval times,
as alehouses, taverns or inns.
Initially, these establishments were attached
to monasteries or operated by alewives
in their homes.
However, it wasn’t until the 19th century
that pubs as we know them today
really came to life.
Some pubs claim on their walls
to be the oldest in Britain, or a particular age. While it adds to the pub’s allure, it may not always be supported by historical evidence.
However, you can find all the old pubs on our map by using the #oldpub hashtag.
To highlight those pubs with historic features that have survived, and which proved their historical significance to CAMRA (UK’s Real Heritage pubs), or have a listed status from Historic England,
we've assigned them with a #historicpub
hashtag on the map.
Although the soulfulness and character of a pub cannot be fully defined, a unique blend of history, community, tradition and authentic decor comes together, and helps to evoke the emotional connection, creating a pub with a soul.
A soulful pub stays true to its roots
and retains its original character, rather than conforming to trends.
From the moment you walk through
the door, you can't help but feel a wave of nostalgia and authenticity wash over you.
The walls are adorned with fascinating memorabilia and artefacts that tell the pub’s story, often taking you back to a specific era.
But it's not just the decor that adds to a pub’s character. It's also the lovely staff
who help bring it all to life.
We’ve visited countless pubs over the years,
and let us tell you, the ones that truly stole our hearts stand out from the crowd with their distinct interior decor that exudes their unique history, theme or identity. These gems tell a captivating
story like no other.
Let’s look at Victorian establisments.
Victorians’ passion for opulence and luxury
is reflected in the architecture and interior decor.
They often feature ornate facades with the inviting entrance framed by decorative floral motifs, stained glass windows and intricate tilework
to create a sense of anticipation.
Once inside, you’re greeted by the cosy dark wood panelling, shimmering gilded mirrors, stunning wooden back bars and walls adorned with enchanting paintings.
You'll also find plenty of leather stools and sturdy wooden tables with cast iron bases.
The colour palette is rich; deep red curtains are paired with elegant green leather seating.
Lighting is key when it comes to creating
the right mood. Hugely enhancing the overall
style and theme of any pub.
Imagine stepping into a pub illuminated with soft, warm lights. You instantly feel at home
and ready to unwind.
On the other hand, bright and cold tone lights
can give off a chilly and unwelcoming vibe,
and clinical feel.
In traditional pubs, warm glow from chandeliers, wall sconces and floor lamps complements the traditional feel. Dimmer lighting and flickering light from candlelight in secluded booths provides a more intimate and romantic setting.
However for a truly rustic ambience in a country pub, antique lantern-style fixtures, table lamps and fairy lights adorning the beams add
to old-world charm.
Last but certainly not least who doesn't like the comforting glow from cackling fire on those cold days for an ultimate pub experience!
Finally, pubs are social spaces to facilitate connections through conversation, shared experiences and fostering a sense of belonging.
These are the places where striking up
a conversation with a total stranger is not only acceptable, but encouraged!
No Beautiful Boozer is complete without super friendly and welcoming staff.
If they are also curious about their punters
and can dish out a beer recommendation
to quench your first that’s just an ultimate Beautiful Boozer experience for us.
Now, let's talk seating arrangements.
We couldn't help but notice that some Beautiful Boozers simply cracked the code
when it comes to seating options.
They have cosy nooks or booths for hanging out with your friends as well as long sofas that will have you rubbing shoulders with fellow punters.
After all, isn't bringing people together the essence of what makes a pub so special?!

Let's take a look at our humble beginnings,
and come along as we pave the way to becoming
